Google Docs

We are going to use Google Docs to create a story. So far you have created a Google Account. You have also personalized your Chrome home page. You will now work with another student to create a story using the "story starter" below. Each person in the group is to add a sentence, one after the other, thus creating a short story "by committee." Make sure your writing is not offensive to anyone in any way. If you see that your partner has made a mistake, feel free to correct his/her work. The short story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Be sure to check spelling. (Tools) At the end of your story, key your name.

One in the group will share the story. The other is responsible for downloading the file as a Word document, saving it properly, and printing it out. Format the story so it looks nice.

The whirling winds of that cold October evening sent chills down my spine...

List the section you find helpful and why.

Snopes.com

Snopes.com is a site you can go to if you received an email or read on social media a "story" or "urban legend" and you want to verify its accuracy. Every one who uses email or social media should know about this site. Your task:

Go to http://www.snopes.com/

Find three (3) true "urban legends" that you think are unbelievable. In Word, summarize each "urban legend" and provide the supporting details that make them true. Be sure to label them TRUE.

Find two (2) false "urban legends" that you thought were true. On the same document, summarize each along with the supporting details that make them false. Be sure to label them FALSE.

Make sure you have included the appropriate details.  List THREE supporting facts.  In class, you will use this document to play Find the Fib. You must be able to orally answer questions about the "urban legend" you selected.

Total points: 25; 5 points for each urban legend: 1 pt: legend, 1 pt: true or false, 3 points: supporting facts.

SHHH...keep what you find a secret.  We are going to play a game with what you have found.

Google Chrome

You've just investigated Google tips, and you've honed your searching skills. You also created a Google account that will allow you access to cool Google Tools. One cool Google Tool is the ability to personalize your Chrome home page.

  • Add four bookmarks, including the two below:
In addition, look at the apps that are available to you. There are apps that can make your life as a student easier. Try them out. If you don't like the app, simply delete it. (right click, Remove from Chrome)

Create Your Own Web Search

Choose a topic. (make sure it is not offensive to anyone in anyway)
Find three (3) web sites that relate to your topic. Cannot use a wiki page...must be an authoritative source.
Generate 10 questions related to your topic. The answers to these questions must come from the three web sites.
In Word, you will create two documents.
  • The first document is the Scavenger Hunt with the questions AND ANSWERS. Put your name and Scavenger Hunt, and "block" in the header of the document.
  • Key in a title centered on the line.  Feel free to use Word Art.
  • Below the title, enter instructions:  "Use the links below to find the answers to the ten questions:"
  • Below the instructions, enter the three web sites where your answers can be found.
  • You will number your ten questions.
  • Key your first question.  Below the question, copy and paste the answer.  Then copy and paste the URL where the answer came from.
  • You will need to turn on and off the "Numbering" button in the Paragraph Group as you proceed through your questions and answers.
  • Save the document as "Scavenger Hunt Answer Key" in your Word Processing folder.
  • The second document is the Scavenger Hunt WITHOUT THE ANSWERS. Simply delete the answers and related web sites from the first document you created. Add a "Name" line at the top for the person who completes it to write in their name. Be sure that both of these documents are saved in your Word Processing folder on the network.
  • Format the document so it looks nice. You may use graphics, if you wish.  Keep the Scavenger Hunt question sheet to one page.
Print the documents and submit.
Total points: 30 points: 20 for Scavenger Hunt Answer Key; 10 for Scavenger Hunt Questions.
