States Table

Go to this website: http://www.50states.com/

Choose 10 states to include in your table.

Create a table with COLUMN HEADINGS that shows each State’s Name, Capital, Date of Statehood.

You must create an appropriate title for this table. (STATE INFORMATION or 10 STATES I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT, etc.

Make sure you do all of the following:

1. You can create your table with Auto Fixed Column Width or Fit to Contents, just make sure you adjust accordingly.
2. Center and bold/underline column headings.
3. Left align text.
4. Adjust column width to reduce excess white space (not necessary if you use Fit to Contents)
5. Apply color to the title cell (and make sure title is typed in CAPS).
6. Change the color of the lines in the table (borders).
7. Sort your table so the states are listed in order of date of statehood, from earliest to latest (highlight your data and click on the Sort icon and choose the appropriate column to sort by)
8. Center table horizontally and vertically on page.

Save as: state table.

Draw Table

The Tables Tools Ribbon appear with a Design and Layout tab.

Design refers to the look of the overall table.  Go here to change borders and add shading.
Layout refers to cells height, width, alignment, etc.

Using the draw table tool, draw a table that has four columns and seven rows: Create the table example. Identify five of your favorite TV shows, fill in the appropriate information. The Main title is in all caps and bold. You can make this font bigger than the rest. Center in the middle all the headings. Left align the column data. You may center the "channel" if you wish.

Use the following tools:

  • Draw Table
  • Align...see above for specific requirements.
  • Distribute Rows Evenly...make the TV show rows equal size.
  • Eraser
  • Border...change any of the borders.
  • Shading Color...at least change the main title and column headings rows.
  • Change Text Direction to the text in the first column so that it's on it's side facing the rest of the table.
When the table is done, center the table horizontally and vertically on the page. Insert a header with your name. Print in color.

MLA Style Report - MHRD Style Manual is in your planner

Turn to page 72 in the text. Type IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA as an unbound report using the MLA Style found in your student planner. Create a separate WORKS CITED page using easybib.com. Export to MS Word. Save these file in your Word processing Folder: Immigration to America report; Immigration Works Cited.

Reminder: MLA requires only the author's name, page number. Look at the yellow side margin for the works cited entries. There is no year included in the internal citations. If there is no author, use the book/resource name. Refer to your style manual for the proper format.

Body of the Report with Internal Citations: 25 points
Works Cited Page: 10 points

Total Points: 35

Due: End of block, Feb. 11/12

Change Samuel Clemens to MLA Style

Open the "Samuel Clemens" unbound report (Pg. 70 in text). This document was formatted using the APA Style. It included a Cover (Title) Page and a Reference Page. Today we will reformat the document into the MLA Style. Refer to Page 4 in your Planner.

Save the document as Sam Clemens MLA in your Basic Formats folder.

No title page is submitted with MLA.  Delete this page. (Insert Ribbon, Cover Page, Remove Cover Page)

MLA uses a specific header. Open the header.  Put your cursor before the page number and key in your last name. There should be a space after your last name before the page number. Make sure you are using Times New Roman font.

Put your cursor on the first line (the beginning of the document). Enter the following...double spaced:

Your Name
My Name
Word Processing/Internet Basics
31 January 2014

Remove any excess spaces...the title "SAMUEL CLEMENS" begins a DS below the date.

Highlight "SAMUEL CLEMENS" Click the "Change Case" button on the Home ribbon...make Samuel Clemens initial caps.

Remove the bold from both main heading and sub heading.

Remove all the bold from the side headings. Number each side heading: MLA call these section headings:
1. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
2. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Note the internal citations: In MLA, the year is not used. This can be deleted along with the , inside the quotes. Because the report cites two sources from the same author, the web title is required. However, the author's last name is not required.  Delete "Railton."  The citation only includes the web title.  Because it is a web site, there are no page numbers.

You have now updated the format to the MLA style. This is the format required by your English teachers. Always check with the teacher assigning the report regarding style and layout.

Works Cited:

APA uses "References" as it's title for the bibliography. MLA uses "Works Cited" as its title. Open the Internet. Go to easybib.com. Copy and paste (or re-key) the url for the first reference. If it doesn't find it, that means you have a typo. Check your accuracy.

Scroll down and fill in the blanks that are highlighted RED. (Author's name, date). Add additional citation.

Check the citations to be included in the Works Cited, Scroll down. Export as Word Document...YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER.

Enter your name in the footer. Save this in your Word Processing folder as Works Cited.

Print both report and works cited. Staple and submit.
