Holiday Mail for Heroes

The American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program empowers people to “Give Something That Means Something” by sending a card of thanks and support to the members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.

Anyone can send a card and you can send as many as you would like!

Write to Deployed Troops, Wounded Warriors, and/or Veterans.

Your task:

Part 1: Use a template to create a card

Open Word.  Click File > New > Office.com Templates > Cards > Holiday or Thank You cards

Choose a card: Be sure the card is designed for 8.5 x 11 paper.
  • Personalize the card:  Address the card to "Dear Service Member" or "Dear Hero"
  • Write a message to the Service Member.
  • Share something about yourself: Family, Pets, favorite Sports or Hobbies.
  • Do not include email or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.
  • Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process.
  • Include your FIRST name ONLY, Morris Hills High School, 520 West Main Street, Rockaway, NJ 07866
  • Print, fold, and sign the card by your name. (FIRST NAME ONLY)
15 pts for the template card

Part 2: Create a card from scratch

Take a sheet of paper and fold it in fourths to create a card. Mark each side with A, B, C, and D.

A = front of the card
B & C = are the inside of the card
D = Back of the card

Open the sheet of paper and notice the quadrants.
A and D are upside down. Therefore, you will need to "flip" vertically and horizontally. Graphics and ClipArt can be flipped. Textboxes cannot in Word 2007 but CAN in Word 2010.

Open Word. Change your margins to .5 in. Display rulers.

To help you see your "workspace," draw a line down the middle of the page (3 3/4" mark) and across the middle of the page (5" mark).

Create a holiday card. Wish the person well. Feel free to search for quotes, lyrics, jokes; content for the inside of the card. Also include a personal message. Don't forget to spell check.

B and C should contain text boxes. Be sure to put your FIRST name on the card along with Morris Hills School, 520 West Main Street, Rockaway, NJ 07866.

Before you print your card, remove the "guide" lines. Also Print Preview!

30 pts. for the originally designed card. Total points: 45

Internet Safety and Google Docs

Officer Haigh, SRO at Morris Hills and member of the Rockaway Boro Police Department, spoke to you about Internet safety during your PE Class. Your task: With another person, create a Google Drawing document that highlights what you learned.

1. Determine who you will work with to complete this assignment.
2. Launch CHROME for your web browser.
3. Determine who in the group will be the "Sharer." If it is not you, give your email address to the "Sharer." Log into your email, wait for the link to the document. If you are the "Sharer," log into your Chrome page, launch Google Docs (Drive or Document), Click the Create button; Choose Drawing. Name the document. Share the document with the group.
4. With your group, create a Drawing Document. Content of the Draw document:
  • Enter a title: Internet Safety!
  • Add a shape with text: What were the three most important tips shared by Officer Haigh.  Each person in the group must identify their top three (3).
  • Make the sign attractive...be sure you fill up the page. Adjust colors so they match.
  • Include your name somewhere in the Drawing document.
Things to consider: What do you remember most from his presentation.  Also tell him how your Internet/cellphone habits have changed as a result of listening to his advice.

This assignment is worth 15 points. Due end of the block.
