Business Letter Project

For this letter, you will pick someone to write to--- an actor/actress, musician, politician, athlete, author, businessperson, celebrity, etc.

You must be able to find an address associated with them in order to write to them. Think of the company, record label, team, agency, television studio, etc. that they are associated with and find that address-- this way you know it will be a legitimate one.

Format the letter using a block format, open punctuation just like the ones you've just created. Look at your notes or page 78 in the text if you don't remember.

1st paragraph: Tell the person who you are, a  little about yourself, and why you are writing. Also let the person know that you will receive extra credit if they respond to your letter.

2nd paragraph: What do you like best about the person's work? Has the person inspired you in any way? Why did you choose to write to this person? Do you have any questions for them?

3rd paragraph: Thank the person for reading the letter and ask for a reply. Restate that a reply receives extra credit.

Make sure your letter has an introduction, middle (containing the questions and anything else you want to tell/ask them) and a closing.

You may put this on your personal letterhead if you choose, but you MUST change the address to 520 West Main Street, Rockaway, NJ 07866.

If not, you must type it as a personal business letter using the school's address as the return address.

Save this as "Name of Person you wrote to" letter.

20 points.

You will print an envelope and these will be mailed!

TEMPLATE LETTERHEAD

Word 2010 offers templates that you can personalize and use. To access:

Click on File > select NEW. Templates are listed on the right. Open the "Letterhead" folder.

Review the Letterheads available for you to personalize. Choose a style that you like. If it contains a letter, delete the letter. Only the letterhead should be visible.

Update the letterhead to include your personal information. The letterhead MUST include:

Your name
Your home address
Your home phone number
Your cell phone number (if you have one)
Your e-mail address
Graphic(s): this is provided for you in the template. Feel free to change graphics

Optional information:
Web site

Save as "Template Letterhead" in your Basic Formats folder. Print in color and submit.

Template Letterhead: 10 points.

ORIGINAL LETTERHEAD

Open a new document. Now you will create your own ORIGINAL personal letterhead.

The information located on top of the page MUST be placed within the top 2". The information located on the bottom of the page MUST be placed within the bottom 1". Notice that this matches the margins for the first page of any letter.

To create letterhead, it is best if you use text boxes. Create a text box to hold the data. Insert > Text Box. Choose "simple text box." To remove the line from the text box, click on Shape Outline > No Outline. You may wish to use Word Art for your name, but that is your choice.

The benefit to using textboxes is that you can easily move these around the page.

Use your formatting skills to make the letterhead look nice. Add a graphic.

Be sure to key in the required information. See above.

Save as "Personal Letterhead" in your Letters folder. Print in color. Measure the top margin and make sure it doesn't go pass the 2" mark. Measure the bottom margin and make sure it doesn't go pass the 1" mark. Look at the letterhead and make sure nothing is cut off.

Original Letterhead: 10 points.

COMPANY LETTERHEAD

Follow the instructions for the above Original Letterhead to complete a letterhead for a company.

You may create a fictitious company, and make up the name, address, telephone, website, and graphic OR you can research the information for an established company and create a letterhead for them using their info and logo.

Remember to stay in the top 2" or bottom 1" of the page.

Save as "Company Letterhead" in your Letters folder. Print in color.

Company Letterhead:  10 points.
