Birthday Newsletter

For this project, you will research events that have happened throughout history on your birthday. You will also include events that have happened in your birth month throughout history. As you research, make sure to have a separate document with the URLs used. You also may want to have a document that contains your info, before placing in the newsletter.

Things to include:
  • Your bio—name, nickname, where you were born, family, hobbies, interests, pets, favorite music, movies, shows, subjects, etc.
  • People born on that day
  • Events that have happened on that day
  • Top movies—www.boxofficemojo.com – the year you were born
  • Top songs—www.popculturemadness.com from the year you were born
  • Top sports teams—World Series/Superbowl/etc. Champions from the year you were born
  • News headlines from the year you were born
  • Information about the month of your birth—birthstone, flower Zodiac sign/information—optional
  • Pictures related to the information in your newsletter
The format:
  • Your newsletter must have the following margins: .5" left, right, top, bottom. (NARROW)
  • The masthead may not be bigger than 2". Follow the same instructions from the Recycling Newsletter.
  • Set for 2 columns after the masthead: Don't forget to choose "This point forward"
  • Headings should be centered and bold. You can make the font bigger, but not larger that 16 pts.
  • Text: 12 points, pick an appropriate font other than Calibri
  • Double space after headings and between paragraphs.
  • Justify paragraphs
  • Make sure you include at least 3 clip art or internet pictures throughout your newsletter. The pictures must be WITHIN the paragraphs, not in between columns, and wrap the text around.
DO NOT just make bulleted lists, you should have some of the newsletter in paragraph form. You will use the Internet to research the topics listed, and create a two column newsletter about your day.

**You must have a reference page, so make sure you create a separate document that lists all of the websites that you used.

Total Points: 50
  • Masthead: 10 points

Why Recycle? Newsletter

Set your margins to .5" (narrow). Today we will be creating a Newsletter.  The top of a newsletter contains a masthead.

  • Using Word Art, key "Recycling Works!"  Change text wrap and format the Word Art to your liking.
  • Position your cursor below the WordArt.
  • Set a Right Tab at 7.25". Key "Marion Township Recycling Guidelines" on the left.  Hit "Tab" and key "January 2014" on the right.  Format the text so it complements the WordArt.
  • Draw a line under the text to separate the masthead from the body of the newsletter. Format the line to match the rest of the masthead.
Now it is time to key the body of the Newsletter.  Position your cursor below the Masthead line.
In the book, key the text on Pages 434 and 435:  It begins with "Why Recycle?"
  • Double space after titles. Make the titles bold and bigger.
  • Single space the paragraphs. Double space between paragraphs. (Home Ribbon)
  • Justify the paragraph text. Most newsletters use justified paragraphs. (Home Ribbon)
  • Customize the bullet in the bulleted list so it matches your color scheme. (Home Ribbon)
  • Insert a DropCaps for the first letter of each "article." (Insert Ribbon)
To create the newsletter, highlight the text beginning with "Why Recycle?" and ending with "Jauary 31 of each year." Make this two columns:  Page Layout : Columns : More columns : make sure Apply: says "This section."

This is a one page newsletter.  Insert a graphic related to the topic. Make sure everything fits on one page. Don't forget, your titles should be bigger than the text.

Note:  Make sure your fonts complement each other.  Don't mix serif and san serif fonts.

50 points.

Play Tab Activity

Think of a play and look up the main characters' names and who plays them (Google "cast of _______________"). You must have at least eight main characters.

Create a document that shows the title of the play, and then has the character's name and the person playing the character separated by a dot leader (just like the concession stand). If you do not find the actual name of a person playing the role, you can make up a name for that spot.

Set this document up just like the concession stand. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT YOU ARE CHOOSING A RIGHT TAB INSTEAD OF DECIMAL TAB AND YOU ARE SETTING THE TAB STOP AT 6.5".

Format the document so there is double spacing in between entries.
Change the font and colors to look attractive.
Make sure the title of the play is larger than the rest of the text.
Add a graphic that has to do with the title of the play.
Add a page border.
Center vertically.

Save as: play

Concession Stand Tab Exercise

Tab Exercise

You were just given the task to create a price list for the concession stand that you will be working at for a fundraiser next weekend. Create a price list using the following items and prices. Make sure to follow the instructions below for setting up a tab with a leader.

Hot Dog- $2.00

Hamburger- $3.00

Cheeseburger- $3.50

French Fries- $1.50

Bottled Water- $2.00

Gatorade- $2.00

Soda- $1.00

Candy- $1.00

Cookies and Brownies- $.50

Instructions:

To set up your list, key and center your title. A double space below the title, at the left margin, type “Hot Dog”. Then, click on the arrow in the lower right corner of the Paragraph Group and click on the Tabs button.

Since you are starting at one margin, you will set the Tab Stop at the other margin, so enter 6.25” for the tab stop.

Under Alignment, click on Decimal (this will align all the decimals so prices are easy to read).

Under Leader, click the Dot Leader (#2—this will put dots in the space between your tabs).

Make sure you click SET, then OK.

Hit tab, and you should have a line of dots take you to the right margin. Type the price. Hit enter and enter the rest of the data. Make sure you have a double space between all entries.

When you are done entering the data, choose an easy to read font and size to apply to the data. Make your title larger than the rest of the text.

Apply a page border and insert an appropriate Clip Art picture below your price list.

Center your list vertically and print.

Word and The Report-- Part 1 and 2

Open to page 109 in the text. Key the report “AMERICA'S CASTLES.” Include the side headings. Don’t forget to double space the entire document.

Note:  The Style applied directly relates to the Style Set selected.  Word 2010 offers different formats compared to other styles. Take time to look at the differences.

• Insert a page number top right. Hide the page number on the first page. (Different First Page)
• Save the document: Castles.docx.

In Word, create a Table of Contents:

• References ribbon : Table of Contents : Automatic Table 2

(The Table of Contents is automatically formatted from text with a heading style.)
o Place cursor below the Table of Contents and insert a Page Break.
o Apply the Title Style to Table of Contents (Same format as the title on 1st page of the report.)
